Choreographic Sound

I was initially inspired by a tradition of "fan dancing" which have been transcended for centuries in the Asian culture. "Fan dancing" is a form of dancing which the performer dances with a fan in their hand. This connection between fan and dancing was interesting because it incorporates the movement of air. Also, since the sound is a vibration of air, there was a nice connection between the wind, sound, movement and the fan.
In an interface design perspective, this design aims to be a light instrument for both functional and aesthetic reasons. Functionally, it is used for dancing so it should be light and the performer should able to make its move by carrying it with one hand. Aesthetically, this is not an automated hardware system but rather a performance tool, so I did not want to design in a complex, massive way. For the sound, it synthesizes wind sound using pink noise and to involve the metaphor of movement, 3rd order ambisonics is used in this instrument.
