〈웅장한 꿈 : Big Dreams〉 is a VR + sound installation created by Jaehoon Choi and Minyoung Kim, inspired by the eco-acoustic habitat of whales and the noise pollution in the ocean. Rather than delivering the environmental “issue” in an informative/literal form, both artists explore the possibility of establishing an audio-visual interaction and multi-sensory environment as a way to re-synthesize the environmental issue by providing an experience of transformation of senses from visual to aural.
Low-frequency audio and physical vibrations created by subwoofers afford to re-imagine sound in a multi-sensory/physical way. The particles in the VR scene are drawn when each audience stares in that direction. The voice of the audience acts as a trigger to generate real-time synthesized chirping sound that is spatialized through a multi-channel speaker system and to change the color of the particles from the VR scene. Through this collective act of drawing the scene and sound creation mediated by vocalization, this mixture of senses creates an intermediary space between the virtual and the real, sound and visuals, human and non-human.
This piece reveals the limitations of a human body (sense) and perception through the metaphor of sea, whales, and "being a different being". By inducing the existence of non-human beings through experiencing their sensory methods and communication environments, this work presents the relationship between humanity and non-humans as intertwined, in the face of the crisis of the Anthropocene.
