Hand Fan Instrument (Choreographic Sound)
I was initially inspired by fan dancing, a traditional art form passed down for centuries across various Asian cultures in which performers dance with hand-held fans. This intersection between dance and the fan fascinated me because it directly engages the movement of air. Since sound itself is acoustic vibration in air, a compelling connection emerged between wind, sound, gesture, and the fan.
From an instrument design perspective, this system prioritizes lightness for both functional and aesthetic reasons. Functionally, because it is designed for dance, it must remain lightweight so the performer can move fluidly while holding it in one hand. Aesthetically, as an expressive performance tool rather than an automated machine, I avoided a bulky or overly complex design. For audio synthesis, the instrument generates wind textures using pink noise, incorporating 3rd-order ambisonics to reflect the spatial metaphor of movement.
